Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Wayne McGregor returns with his dynamic and ambitious FAR on 19 and 20 March 2012.
A Sadler’s Wells co-production, FAR made its world premiere at Sadler’s Wells in 2010. The production binds cutting edge design with choreography made from a radical cognitive research process. Inspired by the controversial Age of Enlightenment and by the 18th century French philosopher Diderot’s very first set of encyclopaedia, FAR mines an era that first placed ‘a body in question’.
Danced by an ensemble of ten performers FAR is set to a haunting score by the critically acclaimed composer Ben Frost. It features lighting by Lucy Carter, set by rAndom International and costumes by Moritz Junge.
Wayne McGregor is a multi award-winning British choreographer, renowned for his physically testing choreography and ground-breaking collaborations across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science. He is the Artistic Director of Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, Resident Company at Sadler’s Wells and he is Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet (appointed 2006).
In January 2011, McGregor was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire). In 2004 McGregor was a Research Fellow at the Experimental Psychology department of Cambridge University. He is a frequent creator of new work for La Scala, Milan, Paris Opera Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, and New York City Ballet; as well as movement director for theatre, film, and music video (Radiohead’s Lotus Flower featuring Thom Yorke, which generated more than 14 million YouTube hits and has been nominated for a Grammy).
His most recent work, UNDANCE, a Sadler’s Wells production and collaboration with internationally renowned composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and Turner Prize-winning visual artist Mark Wallinger, received critical acclaim at its recent world premiere at Sadler’s Wells.
McGregor’s upcoming productions include a new work for The Royal Ballet (April 2012) and a new Rite of Spring for the Bolshoi Ballet (April 2013). In July 2012, McGregor will lead up to 2,000 Londoners in Big Dance Trafalgar Square. Wayne McGregor | Random Dance is the first dance company to release a film on iTunes; the award-winning Entity.
FAR is co-produced by Sadler’s Wells and Peak Performances @ Montclair State (USA), with support from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters Creative Campus Innovations Grant Program.
