Sadler’s Wells streams international hip hop dance festival Breakin’ Convention live via The Space
On Bank Holiday Monday 7 May, Sadler’s Wells annual international festival of hip hop dance, Breakin’ Convention, will be streamed live to audiences all over the world through The Space, a new on-demand initiative by the Arts Council England in partnership with the BBC that offers audiences a new way to experience some of the most exciting arts events from across the UK. The Space runs for six months, from May to October 2012 giving audiences unique access through their computer, tablet, mobile or connected TV.
Breakin’ Convention is the first dance event in The Space offering audiences the opportunity to see all aspects of the international hip hop dance festival, from foyer events to smaller performances in the Lilian Baylis Studio to performances on the Main Stage. Audiences will be able to watch from 4pm on Monday 7 May.
Hosted and curated by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jonzi D, Breakin’ Convention is in its ninth year. It features some of the very best UK and international acts in hip hop dance, offering audiences a range of different styles from breaking and popping to locking, b-boying and newer styles such as house dance, devised from the dance floors and born out of club culture. There are also dozens of extra events in the mix including workshops, film screenings, DJ demos, impromptu foyer freestyle sessions and even live aerosol art.
The line-up for Breakin’ Convention 2012 includes ILL-Abilities, a breakdance company that challenges the misconceptions about people with disabilities; Vagabond Crew who are the current world champions winning both Battler of the Year and the UK B-boy championships in 2011; New York artist Storyboard P, who comes from the underground flexing scene and has created his own ‘mutation’ style and female company and Got to Dance 2012 finalists Boadicea.
Audiences will be able to watch Breakin’ Convention live from 4pm on Monday 7 May on www.thespace.org, www.sadlerswells.com and www.breakinconvention.com. It will also be available on demand after the 7 May on www.thespace.org.
This year Breakin’ Convention embarks on its fourth UK tour taking in eight venues across the UK including newcomer Eden Court, Inverness. Touring international acts Clash 66, Vagabond Crew and ILL-Abilities (Plymouth and Birmingham only) plus local acts in each venue.

The Space is a new on-demand digital arts channel, available free of charge via the internet, mobile phones, tablets and smart TVs. It is a joint initiative by the Arts Council England in partnership with the BBC.
