...you are pushing the work of female choreographers - where does that spring from?
At a press conference held today, 12 September 2012, at Scottish Ballet headquarters in Glasgow and online to media across the world, Chief Executive Cindy Sughrue and incoming Artistic Director Christopher Hampson unveiled forthcoming plans and aspirations for the future of the company.
Q: Any regrets?
Ans: "No regrets — I would do it all again the same way."
It’s easy to admire ECLIPSE for its moments of understated beauty, its modesty, its craft, and the quality of the dancing. Why, then, does it ultimately feel so cold and empty?
Who are your favorite choreographers? 1. "Christopher Wheeldon. He picked me for the first ballet I had created on me .. and I have worked with him on every single work he has done since I joined SFB."
At the time of its premiere in 1964 The Display shocked its audiences. Highly sexualized, violent and thoroughly modern, the ballet divided audiences and critics. But, seen in the context of Helpman’s life, the choices within the work begin to make sense.
The whole troupe’s dedication and excellence in performance was most commendable, if only there were brighter sections to provide a better contrast to the pervasively dark and mournful tone of this piece.
It’s not about the technique anymore, it’s about that extra special something that makes you stand apart from everyone else...
Muriel [Maffre] was an inspiration for me because she got so many great roles even though she was tall. After she retired I started to get some of her old parts.
The best thing about being at SFB is that I got to work with so many choreographers. It inspired me so much.
I'm not sure if this collaboration pushed borders or changed my mind on disability but what I do know is that it was a fine piece of work and I'm very glad I saw it.
