Paris Opera Ballet, New York City Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet – Jewels – New York, Lincoln Center Festival

★★★★✰   It’s not often that one gets to see three such companies side by side, or to experience a work as familiar as Jewels with new eyes…

New York City Ballet – American Rhapsody, The Four Temperaments, The Times Are Racing – Washington

★★★✰✰   To watch works created by the 29-year old Justin Peck, resident choreographer of New York City Ballet, is to experience what it feels like to be young.

New York City Ballet – Russian Seasons and Namouna, a Grand Divertissement – New York

★★★★✰   I still remember my feelings during the premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s Russian Seasons at NYCB in 2006. There was a shock of recognition: this was the thing I had been looking for…

New York City Ballet – La Sonnambula, Prodigal Son, Firebird, Allegro Brillante, Swan Lake, Four Temperaments – New York

★★★★✰   Sara Mearns, who made her name as Swan Queen at the age of nineteen, is still the most thrilling Odette around.

New York City Ballet – Divertimento No. 15, Episodes, Vienna Waltzes – New York

★★★★✰   Divertimento’s aura still shines; you want to see it again, to figure out its fluid, almost magical transitions. It’s a shame it will only be performed four times this season; it takes more than that for the audience, and the dancers, to really get to know it.

New York City Ballet – Midsummer Night’s Dream – New York

★★★★✰   But the kids are just one element of what makes Midsummer tick. Another is the intelligence and efficiency with which the ballet tells its story.

New York City Ballet – Walpurgisnacht Ballet, Sonatine, Mozartiana, Symphony in C – New York

★★★★✰ Some nights at the ballet you just get lucky: all the works are beautiful and the program is well balanced, and each of the casts is led by a ballerina who seems just right for the role.

New York City Ballet – Masters at Work and All Balanchine I bills – New York

★★★★✰ (20), ★★★✰✰ (21) The temperature in Glass Pieces was uncharacteristically low. Under the baton of Clotilde Otranto, the orchestra sounded muffled…

New York City Ballet – Music Director’s Choice: Barber Violin Concerto, Fancy Free, Who Cares?, Candide (Overture) – New York

★★★✰✰ Lauren Gallagher at New York City Ballet’s Winter Season Opening where they introduced their new music director, Andrew Litton, in some style by naming the bill “Music Director’s Choice”…
