Birmingham Royal Ballet – Arcadia (premiere), Wink – Cheltenham

★★★✰✰   The South tour is particularly interesting this year because it features a new piece by Ruth Brill, a first artist within the company, and this is her first major commission.

Birmingham Royal Ballet – Wink, The Moor’s Pavane, The Shakespeare Suite – London

★★★★✰   Wink, best seen from above, is a valuable addition to BRB’s repertoire. So is José Limon’s The Moor’s Pavane, created in 1949.

Birmingham Royal Ballet – Ashton bill: The Dream, A Month in the Country – Birmingham

★★★✰✰ When I think of Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) under David Bintley I think of tradition with a capital T and the latest double bill underlines that in spades.

Birmingham Royal Ballet – Swan Lake (Mathews and Lawrence) – Birmingham

Some partnership work because the dancers are so different and others, as here, work because they share a style and approach – unaffected, nuanced, true and richly musical.

Birmingham Royal Ballet – Les Rendezvous, Kin., Elite Syncopations – Nottingham

Les Rendezvous is 21 minutes of classical movement perfection, but Alexander Whitley comes surprisingly close to besting it with his 20-minute more modern take on ballet – Kin.

Birmingham Royal Ballet – Take Five, Lyric Pieces, Grosse Fuge – London

Jessica Lang’s Lyric Pieces …is light-as-a-feather work of the utmost good taste – in fact just plain gorgeous.
