Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is making a big deal out of its premieres this year, but at the company's "All New" program during its City Center residency, Matthew Rushing's Odetta was the standout work.

And the opening night? Well it was a typical night in many respects - one piece giving cause for hope, another had its fleeting moments and the third wasn't really ready yet for the big time.
There is surely something excellent lurking within this work, the intent of which I have failed to perceive, but I will just have to wait for The Choreographer’s next Cut to get it.

It's the name of the game that one does not necessarily appreciate all plans (or indeed how they crystallise out in practice) but I have to say that Sadler's Wells set a benchmark re new work/experiences and for where you want a progressive art to be.
