Kamala Devam Company – Ankusha and Other Mysteries – London

★★★✰✰   All up, I much liked the dance I saw for being so fluid, boldly physical and yet also sensual and beautifully rendered. There’s a quiet strength to all of it.

Natalia Osipova – Qutb, Silent Echo and Run Mary, Run – London

★★★✰✰   Three of our leading contemporary choreographers added to the megawatt talent of these two Russian dancers (plus Polunin’s bad boy reputation), seems a surefire recipe for success. However, that’s not entirely the case.

No Body – Installations by Lucy Carter, Michael Hulls, Nitin Sawhney, Siobhan Davies and Russell Maliphant – London

★★★✰✰   No Body was an interesting diversion, that confirms the artistic chops of the technical talent that makes so many shows pop and zing. As an exercise I hope it might be repeated every few years.

Kidd Pivot and Electric Company Theatre – Betroffenheit by Crystal Pite and Jonathon Young – London

★★★✰✰   I give it 3 stars because when you do see Pite’s movement it’s amazing, but in any other hands this was a 2 star night.

Sylvie Guillem – Life in Progress – New York

More than one dancer has been dubbed a “punk ballerina” but no one deserves it more than Sylvie Guillem, who has ruffled feathers at the world’s best companies, and at 50 years old is still on top.
