ROYAL OPERA HOUSE LIVE CINEMA SEASON 2012/13
9 productions, 32 countries, over 900 cinemas

In association with Bank of America Merrill Lynch

The Royal Opera House is delighted to announce its 2012/13 Cinema Season of nine titles from the world renowned Covent Garden stage, generously supported by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Now in over 900 cinemas across 32 countries, the Royal Opera House Cinema Season continues to expand each year.

Swan Lake opens the Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season on 23rd October. This Season’s line up of opera and ballet includes four new opera productions; Verdi’s masterwork Nabucco with Plácido Domingo making his role debut. Featuring some of the greatest choral music ever written, Nabucco’s premiere in 1842 confirmed Verdi as the major new force in Italian opera. Kasper Holten, The Royal Opera’s Director of Opera makes his ROH directorial debut with Eugene Onegin with British baritone Simon Keenlyside in the title role: Rossini’s Donna del Lago, directed by the Associate Director of The Royal Opera, John Fulljames, stars Juan Diego Flórez, Joyce DiDonato and Colin Lee; and Britten’s Gloriana, marking three major anniversaries; the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth, the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation for which the opera was composed, and the 60th anniversary of the premiere at Covent Garden, is directed by Richard Jones with Susan Bullock in the role of the Virgin Queen and Toby Spence as the hot-headed Essex.

The Royal Ballet opens the ROH Cinema Season in October with a live performance of one of the greatest classics in the repertory, Swan Lake, with Zenaida Yanowsky and Nehemiah Kish in the title roles. The Nutcracker is a perennial Christmas favourite for children and adults alike with its intoxicating score by Tchaikovsky, a Christmas tree that magically seems to grow, a fierce battle between the toy soldiers and the army of mice led by the Mouse King, and the famous dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy danced by Roberta Marquez, with Steven McRae as the Prince. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland will be screened live to cinemas and was a sell-out success when it premiered at the Royal Opera House in 2011. With choreography by Christopher Wheeldon and music by Joby Talbot, this is a special night not to be missed.

This exciting selection of world class opera and ballet going live into the cinema comes hot on the heels of the successful 2011/12 cinema season; La Fille Mal Gardée was number 5 in UK Box Office on the day of the live screening, Romeo and Juliet was our biggest selling ballet and Rigoletto was our biggest selling opera in cinema yet.

The Royal Opera House continues to lead the way in opera, ballet, music and dance in cinema both 2D and 3D and the many platforms available including digital downloads, CD, DVD and BLU-ray all distributed through Opus Arte. Each year the number of cinema sites in the UK alone that carry Royal Opera House screenings is steadily increasing with more than 240 sites in the UK taking the entire Royal Opera House Cinema Season and over 900 sites worldwide.
