RAMBERT THROWS OPEN ITS DOORS FOR OPEN HOUSE EVENTS AT NEW SOUTH BANK HOME
This autumn Rambert moves to a new purpose-built home on the South Bank – completing the artistic circle at London’s cultural hub by joining music, film, theatre and the visual arts. To celebrate the Company will be hosting a series of events showcasing all that Rambert does best, connecting people with leading industry professionals and taking them to the heart of the creative process.
From Monday 2 – Saturday 14 December, Rambert will be throwing open its doors and inviting the public to explore the Company’s purpose-built, state-of-the-art facilities where visitors can tour the building, watch rehearsals, observe artists at work and take part in classes.
Rambert’s world class dancers will be on display as they undertake their daily technique class, rehearse for upcoming performances and demonstrate the choreographic process as Artistic Director, Mark Baldwin, creates new work in the studio.
The two week programme also includes performances of Mark Baldwin’s The Rite of Spring by the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, concerts by the Rambert Orchestra, renowned cellist David Cohen and London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Foyle Future Firsts, and Vintage Rambert, a cross-arts performance piece created in response to Rambert’s Archive by young people aged 16-25.
There will be contributions from each of Rambert’s Associates, including an installation from inaugural Artist in Residence, Abigail Reynolds; a performance of a recent composition by Music Fellow, Cheryl Frances-Hoad; and a presentation by Scientist in Residence, Professor Nicola Clayton, about the links between movement, imagination and learning.
Workshops will be on offer for people of all ages, experienced dancers and those who are completely new to dance.
Industry experts will lead a programme of talks and panel discussions inspired by the Company’s ambitions for the new building including training and the development of dancers; music, art and dance as collaborative art forms; and science and art. Panel members include choreographer, Shobana Jeyasingh, contemporary conceptual artist and painter, Michael Craig-Martin, and composer and record producer Gabriel Prokofiev.

The capital project has been over twelve years in development and construction began in earnest in November 2011. The design is by award-winning architects Allies and Morrison and construction by Vinci Construction UK. The site on Upper Ground has been made available to Rambert by Coin Street Community Builders, one of the UK’s leading social enterprises, in return for a commitment to lead a significant community dance programme in the local area and for the peppercorn rent of one pair of ballet shoes per year.
All events are FREE, but booking is essential as capacity is limited.

Double Fold – Rambert’s inaugural artist-in-residence Abigail Reynolds has created a dance piece responding to the move from one rehearsal space to another. Panels from Rambert’s former studio in Chiswick are suspended in a new studio creating an environment for five dancers. With a live electronic sound score commissioned by Emika especially for the piece, it is an exploration of doubling, layering, repetition and time.
