Press Release

Please help us provide specialist care for dancers’ health…

Donate on THURSDAY, FRIDAY or SATURDAY this week during the Big Give Christmas Challenge and have your pledge DOUBLED!

Dance UK is asking you to support the work of The National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science as part of The Big Give Christmas Challenge this December.

Individuals who donate via the Big Give website at 10am on 5th, 6th or 7th December can have the chance for their donation to be DOUBLED.

Since opening in May 2012 The National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science’s dance injury clinic at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital has treated over 200 dancers with a growing waiting list. To meet this demand, we have just launched a new clinic in Birmingham – but we need to do more. Offering dancers additional health care advice and help with their full rehabilitation after injury is a major priority.

You can help us to realise our goal and play a part in making quality health care provision for dancers a reality.

Donate via the Big Give website at:
new.thebiggive.org.uk/project/8874
from 10am on Thursday 5th, Friday 6th and Saturday 7th December

Every donation counts and will make a huge difference!

Just £5 pounds from each Dance UK member will raise £7000; £40 pounds from our Corporate Members will raise £10,000!

  • £50 will pay for one session with a physiotherapist or sports massage therapist
  • £200 will pay for a full health and fitness screening or a consultation with a nutritionist, psychologist or physiologist
  • £500 will provide a week of physiotherapy for a dancer recovering from serious injury

Please support with as much as you can afford.

Your donation will go directly to help someone like the dancer who recently said, “I cannot say enough about how good for me this clinic has been….(it’s) been a real life-saver.”

Dancers treated at the NIDMS clinics have been struggling with injury for months and were unable to find or afford the right diagnosis, advice or treatment. These dancers are now back performing or have a clear pathway to recovery and a realistic idea of how to manage their injury. Their response has been overwhelmingly positive:

“I’m extremely grateful to the NIDMS injury clinic…I believe that without their input, I would not be dancing now. I would recommend, and HAVE recommended the service to many others”.
Emer Walsh, Assistant Choreographer and Resident Director, Into the Hoods

“Dancers have specific needs when it comes to injuries. Having the ability to be treated by a medical specialist with a complete understanding of an injury and the demands of a dancer’s body would be incredible. It would certainly aid a fast and accurate road to recovery”
Claire Tilling: Dance Captain, Phantom of the Opera

Gillian Lynne CBE says:
“Dancers constantly injure themselves and need quick attention to prevent deep damage. For them to have a specialist place to care for them – that understands the wide variety of injuries possible in our craft is very needed and very exciting. BRAVO Dance UK!”

Please support our Big Give Campaign to enable us to continue and extend our work to provide higher quality service, in order to keep more dancers fit, at peak health and working, with long, happy and healthy working lives.
