Dutch National Ballet – Frida – Amsterdam

★★★★✰   This was much more than my expectation of an update to Broken Wings. Part prequel, part sequel; it now stands proudly alone as an excellent new addition to the Dutch ballet repertoire.

Scottish Ballet – A Streetcar Named Desire – Washington

This smartly-conceived and expertly-developed translation of prose to movement was a result of an artistic partnership between film and theater director Nancy Meckler and choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, well-known in Washington for her collaboration with the Washington Ballet.

Music is always my anchor. I can’t work without a very solid musical base. The lion’s share of the work I’ve made over the years has been music-led and the primary instigator in Subterrain is the Turnage music.

That said, the narrative is graphic and gripping. Scottish Ballet’s dancers prove themselves dramatic actors in supporting roles as well as principal ones….
