Nederlands Dans Theater 2 (NDT2) – Schubert, Sad Case, Some Other Time, mutual comfort, Solo, Cacti – London

★★✰✰✰   Hans van Manen’s Solo for three men comes as a blessed relief for its luscious co-ordination and witty response to Bach’s Violin Partita.

Nederlands Dans Theater 2 (NDT2) – I New Then, mutual comfort, Solo, Cacti – Woking

★★★★✰   It seems an age (well 4 years) since NDT2 were last touring the UK and I’ve missed them. They might be the young company of Nederlands Dans Theater (aged 18-23) but they put on a fine show…

Sydney Dance Company – CounterMove: Cacti, Lux Tenebris – Sydney

★★★✰✰ It would be hard to find two more diverse works on the one program than those in CounterMove, the first program for 2016 from Sydney Dance Company.

Birmingham Royal Ballet – Ashton bill: The Dream, A Month in the Country – Birmingham

★★★✰✰ When I think of Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) under David Bintley I think of tradition with a capital T and the latest double bill underlines that in spades.

Boston Ballet – Program A: The Second Detail, Resonance, Cacti – New York

Boston Ballet – Pricked: Etudes, D.M.J. 1953-1977, Cacti – Boston

The evening ended with Alexander Ekman’s Cacti, one of the most wildly original, hilarious dances I’ve ever seen. If the Keystone Cops had taken up ballet, this is what they’d have looked like.

Nederlands Dans Theater 2 – Passe-Partout, Gods & Dogs, Cacti – London

Across all three works, the art of set and costume designs, video projections and lighting vied with an almost equal intensity of image-creation with the music and choreography… It was all too much to absorb in a single sitting.
