Richard Alston Dance Company – Detour, Quartermark, Proverb, Brahms Hungarian – London

★★★★✰ Alston’s choreography is formal in that it has structure, style and steps, instead of resorting to running in circles. Its partnering etiquette is courteous rather than abusive.

Richard Alston Dance Company – Mid Century Modern, Carnaval, Cut and Run – London

★★★★★   It must be tempting to get carried away by sentiment when it comes to celebrating both a 70th birthday and fifty years as a choreographer in a programme that also marks the departure of a special muse.

Ballet Black – House of Dreams, Captured, Red Riding Hood – London

★★★✰✰   It’s rather a scandal that Ballet Black get no regular Arts Council support and yet proportionally they do far more to put new work out there and also before a public that is not your usual ballet crowd.

Richard Alston Dance Company – Burning, Rejoice in the Lamb, Holderlin Fragments, Overdrive – Edinburgh

It may be his name only on the posters, but Richard Alston firmly shares the limelight with Martin Lawrance in this quadruple bill, which sees the premiere of Lawrance’s new work, Burning, placed alongside three of Alston’s own pieces.

Ballet Black – A Dream Within a Midsummer Night’s Dream, Limbo, Two of a Kind – London

Now in its thirteenth year, Ballet Black’s specialness is not the colour of its performers’ skin but the quality and quantity of the works its director, Cassa Pancho, commissions: over 30 new ballets to date. Where else could ballet dancers experience such a cornucopia of creativity?

Alston is going to develop Isthmus, thank goodness, as soon as he has the opportunity – it’s a stunner.

Ballet Black – Storyville quad bill – London

‘Storyville’ is a familiar morality tale, but Cira Robinson’s heartfelt commitment as Lola makes us care anew. Hampson has indeed turned her into a star… ‘Captured’ is a triumph for the company and Martin Lawrance, the choreographer.

Richard Alston Dance Company – Roughcut, Lie of the Land, A Ceremony of Carols – London

Taking notes at a performance by Richard Alston’s dancers is – for me, at least – a pointless occupation. Descriptive words and points of reference fly past in an unending stream, like Canada Geese migrating for the winter: start writing and you are never likely to stop!
