Memorable Performances of 2017 – New York
Six Performances That Stayed with Me in 2017 – Marina Harss with her personal selection of New York dance memories this last year.

Paris Opera Ballet, New York City Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet – Jewels – New York, Lincoln Center Festival
★★★★✰ It’s not often that one gets to see three such companies side by side, or to experience a work as familiar as Jewels with new eyes…

Saburo Teshigawara / KARAS – Sleeping Water – New York
★★✰✰✰ There are dances that one figures out in the first five minutes. Hope as one might that the piece will evolve or turn a corner, it soldiers on in the same vein, section after section, until the end.

National Ballet of China – Peony Pavilion, Red Detachment of Women – New York
The National Ballet of China dancers are beautifully trained, surprisingly tall, willowy – even the men – and delicately featured.

Bolshoi Ballet – Spartacus – New York
If there’s one thing you can say for Yuri Grigorovich’s 1968 ballet Spartacus, it’s that it gets its point across loud and clear.

Bolshoi Ballet – Swan Lake – New York
It is even more disappointing that the troupe should open its run with a Swan Lake so lackluster… It’s not the dancers’ fault. At every level, the Bolshoi dancers move with thrilling force and fullness.

New York City Ballet – Spring Gala – New York
I think it’s safe to say that neither of the new works knocked the planet off its axis…
