Hamburg Ballet – The Little Mermaid – Washington

★★★✰✰   It’s a somber and dark story; yet in Neumeier’s hands it gets even darker. Don’t expect Disney’s happily-ever-after – this Little Mermaid is certainly not for children.

Thomas Adès: Concentric Paths — Movements in Music – Works by Armitage, McGregor, Pite, Whitley – New York

While this is a generalization, it’s safe to say the most hotly anticipated work of the night was Pite’s Polaris, set to Adès’ work of the same name.

Scottish Ballet – A Streetcar Named Desire – Washington

This smartly-conceived and expertly-developed translation of prose to movement was a result of an artistic partnership between film and theater director Nancy Meckler and choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, well-known in Washington for her collaboration with the Washington Ballet.
