BalletBoyz – Young Men – London

William Trevitt and Michael Nunn have taken their BalletBoyz company up a few gears with this latest work; pitching their 11 male dancers – and two guest women – into an intense, demanding, full-length piece exploring the horrors of war.

BalletBoyz, The Talent, at Deloitte Ignite 2014 – The Murmuring, MeTheus, Mesmerics – London

I like McNally’s sense of fun but I also like this more serious side because the movement is also fresh and unpredictable. Of all the ballet choreographers coming through I think hers is one of the most original voices.

Royal Ballet – Draft Works 2014 – London

At the outset I have to say I thought this year was one of the better years and we should all feel encouraged at the creativity on show.

Russell Maliphant Company – Still Current bill – London

Still / Current is a marvellously evocative title for Maliphant’s work, capturing the mercurially elusive quality of his choreography and his own dancing. And the good news is that Maliphant is back on stage…

Sadler’s Wells – Spring / Summer 2013 Programming

It’s the name of the game that one does not necessarily appreciate all plans (or indeed how they crystallise out in practice) but I have to say that Sadler’s Wells set a benchmark re new work/experiences and for where you want a progressive art to be.

Northern Ballet – Perpetual Motion mixed bill – Leeds

This was a pleasant night, pleasant for its broad content but especially pleasant because mixed bills and choreographic variety are not something normally associated with Northern Ballet. It’s a time of great hardship for all the major companies as grants are pegged back and I hope the company will continue its journey in introducing more variety like this.
