★★★★✰ Sidi Larbi Cherkaouis’s work is full of surprises. Icon, first premiered in 2016 is another fruitful collaboration between Anthony Gormley and Cherkaoui in which clay moulds both the theme and the dancers.
★★✰✰✰ Cherkaoui looks older than his years, so much so that his relationship in Play with Shivalingappa risks being unsettling. As dancers, they are no longer equals, as they must have been in 2008.
★★★✰✰ M¡longa has a lot of spirit to offer when it lets the dance take the lead.
★★★★✰ The work itself is a statement of faith that collaboration is better than confrontation. Each dancer has a powerful presence but Cherkaoui has forged a remarkable unity from these disparate elements...

This was a tremendous show with which to close the Birmingham International Dance Festival of 2014.
This is not Cherkaoui’s most successfully realised work but his affection and respect for tango shine through, and the dancers are a joy to watch.
This run is very brief. Let’s hope it returns.
