New York City Ballet – The Times are Racing, The Shimmering Asphalt, Fearful Symmetries – New York

★★★✰✰   More than anything, Peck’s “The Times are Racing” reminded me of the movie Rebel Without a Cause. These kids are uneasy, but what is the object of their unease?

New York City Ballet – La Sonnambula, Prodigal Son, Firebird, Allegro Brillante, Swan Lake, Four Temperaments – New York

★★★★✰   Sara Mearns, who made her name as Swan Queen at the age of nineteen, is still the most thrilling Odette around.

BalletBoyz – Life: Rabbit, Fiction – London

★★★★✰   Having missed the opening night of the BalletBoyz tour, at Sadler’s Wells, a few weeks ago, I caught up with it, just three bus stops away from my home…

BalletBoyz – Life: Rabbit, Fiction – London

★★★★✰   Michael Nunn and William Trevitt never fail to surprise: this latest double-bill for their ten-strong all-male dance company is a case in point.

Martha Graham Dance Company – Gala + Cave of the Heart, Inner Resources, Rust and Chronicle bills – New York

★★★✰✰   The gala was a well-put-together, briskly-paced affair, a sampler of Graham excerpts dating back to her very first recital, in 1926.

24th International Ballet Festival of Havana, 2014

This time, I made 15 trips to the theatres – there were performances at 5pm and 9pm each day – and saw 82 different full-length ballets or extracts in the eight days I was in Havana.

Fall For Dance Festival – Program 5: Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, Pontus Lidberg Dance, Aakash Odedra Company, Sarasota Ballet – New York

The word transcendent gets tossed around a lot, overused, especially in the performing arts. But if one performer deserves it at this year’s Fall For Dance Festival, it is Aakash Odedra.

Morphoses/Pontus Lidberg – Within (Labyrinth Within) – New York

Within (Labyrinth Within) is no masterpiece, but it presents exciting possibilities for contemporary ballet while avoiding the hyperextended steps and sexual clichés that muddy so much of the field.
