Royal Ballet – Obsidian Tear (premiere), The Invitation, Within the Golden Hour – London

★★★★✰   The range of roles shows the Royal Ballet dancers, up-and-coming soloist, established principals and character artists, at their very best.

Ave Maya Gala in Memory of Maya Plisetskaya – London

★★★✰✰ Every gala needs a revelation, and this one was provided by Sergio Bernal, a Spanish dancer who dominated the stage in an imperious farruca solo from Antonio’s flamenco version of The Three Cornered Hat…

Royal Ballet – Giselle – London

★★★★✰ Lamb’s mad scene is all the more effective by starting as though she’s a broken porcelain doll, uncomprehending. She retreats into her herself in disbelief at Albrecht’s treachery.

Royal Ballet – Wheeldon bill: Strapless, After the Rain, Within the Golden Hour – London

★★★✰✰ Wheeldon’s talents are on display, as well as the Royal Ballet’s dancers. A pity, then, that Strapless has been exposed without previews to sort out its weaknesses.

The Royal Ballet – Infra, Divertissements, The Age of Anxiety, The Dream, Song of the Earth – New York

These are dancers worth following in a wide repertory of works; it’s a shame to see them go while feeling we’ve barely gotten to know them better.

The Royal Ballet – Don Quixote – Washington

At 42, Acosta is still a powerful presence. A much-loved artist around the world, he is undoubtedly one of the greatest male dancers of his generation.

Royal Ballet, Royal Opera House – A Gala Celebration: Life Reimagined – London

Both Royal Ballet premieres, one by Kim Brandstrup, the other by Liam Scarlett, were surely keepers, bound to be seen again.

Two Russian Galas – Dance Open in St. Petersburg, Soul of Dance in Moscow

Margaret Willis has been busy: in St. Petersburg at the Dance Open Festival Gala and 2 days later in Moscow at the Soul of Dance Ballet Gala. And important awards were given at both…

Royal Ballet – Serenade, Sweet Violets, DGV: Danse à grande vitesse – London

It’s always good to get back to mixed programmes after one of the Royal Ballet’s long runs of blockbusters, and better still when the first item on the bill is Balanchine’s timeless Serenade.

Derek Deane created a winner that always seems to sell well and which people, including me, don’t grow tired of. But fill your boots this year – next year “Romeo and Juliet” returns as the ENB/RAH blockbuster
