Ballet Black – The Suit, Ingoma – London

★★★★✰   Merging these two works onto the same bill created a powerful double-header of impressive and arresting dance theatre.

Clod Ensemble – On The High Road – London

★★★✰✰   This is the stuff of which nightmares are made. A frightful storm from which sundry strangers take refuge to spend the night in an isolated place provides the essence of On The High Road…

Northern Ballet – Victoria (Marston premiere) – Leeds

★★★✰✰   Where the ballet takes off is when there are only two or three major characters on stage and then Marston clearly shows intentions and emotions and the dancing becomes rich and telling, clever and gorgeous.

Scottish Ballet – Cinderella – Glasgow

★★★★✰   This is my second review of Scottish Ballet’s Cinderella this winter. Why? Well, it’s a production I like and I wanted to see more dancers in it, silly!

Le Patin Libre – Threshold – London

★★★★✰   If there is a major difference between Le Patin Libre of 2014 and now, then surely it lies in this merger of these skaters’ extreme skills with the same elite capability in their artistic collaborators.

Kevin and Karen Clifton – Kevin and Karen Dance – London

★★★★✰   This show defied the norm: a counter-intuitive observation about a spin-off from the archetypal routine of a Saturday evening institution that millions of us watch with our feet up.

Antonia Grove / Probe – Now You See It – London

★★★★✰   This hour-long solo was a tour de force for a charismatic performer, bearing her soul in a courageous, largely autobiographical account of an upbringing in which there were five simultaneous conversations going on at every mealtime.

★★★★★   A total of 150 cinemas will show the ballet, which was filmed at the Liverpool Empire, in October 2017

Richard Alston Dance Company – Mid Century Modern, Carnaval, Cut and Run – London

★★★★★   It must be tempting to get carried away by sentiment when it comes to celebrating both a 70th birthday and fifty years as a choreographer in a programme that also marks the departure of a special muse.

Mark Bruce Company – Macbeth – London

★★★✰✰   Violence lurks in every corner of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, from supernatural malevolence to visceral carnage. Mark Bruce’s new take on the production taps into classic horror tropes to animate this force…

Les Ballets de Monte – The Taming of the Shrew – Monte Carlo

★★★★✰   Maillot’s work is generally replete with a sense of irony and eroticism and Shakespeare gave him enormous scope for both!

Tamara Rojo and Ivan Vasiliev in Le Jeune Homme et la Mort.© Foteini Christofilopoulou. (Click image for larger version)

English National Ballet – Le Jeune Homme et la Mort, La Sylphide – London

★★★★✰   One great privilege of Rojo being both director and dancer must be the opportunity to choose her own partners and this year’s returning guest is Ivan Vasiliev…

Rambert – A Linh Curva, Symbiosis, Goat – London

★★★★✰   There is a cocksure, swaggering confidence about this company and these dancers, in this programme.
